Innovation has traditionally been conceptualized as technological product innovation in private companies, but has lately been widened in research, policy and practice to encompass more socially oriented processes, where new solutions to tackle global, societal challenges are developed, implemented and disseminated. The presentation gives an overview of the main findings interdisciplinary, international front line research on social innovation, highlighting how social innovation can provide sustainable solutions to global challenges like poverty, inequality, migration, unemployment and ill health.

Malin Lindberg is Associate Professor in Gender and Technology at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. She studies innovation from various inclusive perspectives, focusing social innovation, gendered innovation, place innovation, among other topics. She specializes in participatory research, where new knowledge is developed jointly between researchers and societal actors in order to optimize its theoretical and practical relevance.
